Target Audience - T5 The Last Dance

After researching many Bands and Artists in the music industry i have found that most Pop Bands have  a Target Audience which focuses on age and gender. For example, The Vamps are a Pop Group who have been together since 2012. Their Target audience is mostly Female within the age of 12+. This also applies to bands such as McFly, The Wanted, One Direction and more artists within the music industry such as Justin Bieber.

For my music video, the Band seen in the video 'T5' would have a target audience of mostly Female within the age of 14+, this is relatable to bands such as Lawson, The Script, Busted and many more bands in the music industry. The reason why the band would attract more of a female audience is because the music the band plays is more emotive and focuses on relationships i.e Break Ups. Another reason for the band too attract more of a female audience is because of the bands appearance (A Group of Teenagers, playing music which they love).

Diary Day 5 (Thursday 8th October 2015) - Posters

Today i have been researching different Band/Artist posters which help to promote an album. Each poster i look at will vary between different styles of Music such as Punk, Pop and Rock

1) Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown Poster (Punk)
This poster is based around the Album Cover, displaying a brick wall with graffiti sprayed on it with two people kissing, The Green Day Logo is in big, bold text which looks like paint dripping. The other text presented is similar however its not bold and in different colours. The poster in itself is very colourful and decorative which is what i aim to look for on my poster. This poster makes me think about what i'd like to aim for when designing my poster. do i want the band to be presented on the main cover or do i want to be creative and use my two characters in my Music Video to create a sense of a story being told within the Album. I need to think about the colours im going to use and why id chose them. The text at the bottom gives a very short intel into what songs are on the album, with company credits presented at the bottom.

2) Slash - World on Fire Poster (Rock)
This poster is very Creative and Arty. The poster shows a canvas of melted toys and figurines creative a 'World on Fire' scene. The artwork used was taken from a piece made by Ron English who is a PopArt Artist who made the toy canvas for the Album Cover. The text is very bold yet plain like Ariel font, the text is plain yet affective because there are loads of colours used in the poster in which it makes it stand out however because the text is white with a black shadow around it, it makes it stand out above everything else. The poster uses some company text and some logos to tell the audience where they can get the Album. HMV is a huge company which specialises in Music and Film, this is one of the main companies which specialise in Music such as ITunes, Spotify and Amazon Music, the only difference is HMV is a store instead of an online service.

3) Jessie J - Who You Are Poster (Pop)
This poster is very basic due to the fact it displays the album cover itself and the rest is in Black, this blends well with the contrast of the poster as its mainly Black, Gold and White colour based. The Songs are presented in white and the subtitles are presented in a Gold/Yellow colour. We can see some more company credits just like the Slash Poster which brands different companies however this is different compared to the Slash poster because it doesn't advertise the music company in which the audience can go there and purchase it. The poster displays the Lava Logo (Recording Company) and Universal Republic (Record Label). The Font used in the Logo 'Jessie J' is very powerful on the page which stands out on the black behind it. She is looking very powerful and which she's looking at the camera which looks like she's looking into the readers eyes.

Diary Day 4 (Tuesday 6th October 2015) - Album Cover

Today i started to work on the Album Cover and Digipak, I mainly started to research individual Album Covers looking at different Bands and Artists in different areas of music such as Punk, Rock and Pop.

1) Green Day - American Idiot (Punk)
This is the first Album cover to come to mind when i think of Punk, Green Day have been influential for so many Artists in the industry in todays age, they have influenced the likes of 5 Seconds of
Summer, Bowling for Soup, You Me at Six and many more. The Artwork used on the album is so iconic its familiar to any Punk, Pop Rocker in the world. The Album is very basic but very meaning-ful at the same time. American Idiot is an album in which each song talks about the Idiot Nation of the United States of America, with each song referring to a certain character. The Album tells a story of democracy, Love and War within Suburban America. The Heart like a Hand Grenade shows the battle between Love and War in itself with the words American Idiot stained in distorted red text like the blood of a Nation.

2) McFly - Radio:ACTIVE (Pop)
This Album cover wasn't the first one to come to mind when i think of Pop, However the design of the cover is very basic for a Platinum selling Band. The Album shows 9 TV Screens, 4 with each individual member of McFly in each screen, the other 5 Screens show drawings of mouths which look like they are crying out for help. Radioactive refers to a broken down world in modern day society, The McFly Logo is boldly presented in the centre of the cover in Green Glowing Text like some Nuclear Chemical. There are little bits in the cover which add more detail to the album such as the little text in the top right hand side of the TV Monitors which read 'Radio: Active, 20/09/08, 20:15' This is subtle because the Monitors display the date in which the Album was released in this case '20th September 2008'.

3) 5 Seconds of Summer - Self Titled Debut Album (Punk Pop)
This is one of the newest Album covers in my collection which shows the 4 members of 5 Seconds of Summer standing infront of a white background with a spray painted X covering the Band like tape. The Band's Logo is quite iconic as it shows the Bands name in a sticker text, these stickers are the type you'd see on the side of a folder draw at work or on a lunch box. We can clearly see the Band's Symbol presented underneath the name which shows a tally reading '5'. This is very basic for any Band to do yet its very effective as this helps not only to brand the Artist but to also helps to sell merchandise, the Album Cover can be used on Posters, Lunch Boxes, School Bags and many more.

With the research i have gathered i now have more of an insight into what id like to have on my Album Cover for my Band T5. I now need to look at different Digipak's to decide on what id like to have presented in the booklet besides Lyrics and Pictures.

Diary Day 3 (Monday 5th October 2015) - Editing Structure

Today i started to work on the structure of my edit, In the Media Lesson on Thursday 1st October 2015 once i finished filming the Performance I decided to start working on the structure of the Performance, I used my Storyboard to help correspond each clip to each section on the storyboard. Due to no narrative being filmed by then i wasn't able to work on editing anything else besides clip lengths, colour correction and Cinemascope effects. Today is now Monday and using the 4 days I've had since our last Media Lesson i have completed the structure of the Performance and the Beginning of the Narrative and the Ending. Due to the amount of clips used (Total of 36 clips) it made it harder to edit the main sequence, so I decided to merge each Frame in on Video Timeline and Labeled each Timeline with the section of the Music Video (E.G - Performance, Narrative Beginning/End...)

as you can see from the screenshot to the right, I have labeled each Video Bar coresponding to a certain section in the Music Video. Because i had finished working on the Main Structure of the Performance and part of the Narrative I decided to use the information I gathered on Thursdays Session and put it to good use. To create a more detailed Music Video i have added Cinemascope Bars to give it a more Cinematic feel, I've also imbedded the VEVO logo in the bottom right hand corner of the frame. In the two clips presented on the top of the screen you can clearly see on the left hand side the original raw footage and on the right hand side you see the current footage used in the timeline, I have used some Colour Correction to darken the contrast and boost some of the brightness to help make the scene look more detailed and enhanced. I've also used some an effect called Sharpen which is quite self explanatory, This has made my output look more detailed by sharpening the clips to make it more focused.

In the next Media Lesson i plan to continue editing certain clips and experiment with lighting to create a balanced lighting in the Music Video and i also plan to work more on Posters and Print Text for the Music Video before i film on Friday 9th October 2015 - The Dream Sequence

Diary Day 2 (Friday 2nd October 2015) - Day 2 of Filming 'Narrative'

Today at 8.35, Myself and Thomas Whitehead went over to QEMS back to the set to start filming the Introduction to the narrative and the Ending. I was hoping to film the Dream Sequence in the 2 hour shoot i had planned however Georgia my second Actress got taken ill meaning this needed to be filmed another day where by Thomas and Georgia are both looking Fit and Healthy. I told Thomas to
wear his standard Landau Forte Suit as i wanted to give the feeling like he's running to a formal gathering such as a Party or Prom. He decided to wear his purple tie which connotates the goofy emotion this character has, The Character is a hopeless romantic who's never found a place in his heart for the right girl to come along and change his life forever. As Thomas is the Drummer in the Band 'T5' i wanted to create a character different to what we see during the performance, Meaning Thomas would have to wear completely different clothing and act like a different person. I decided to use Thomas in my Music Video as i wanted to give the feeling like the Band is the Guy who predicts their future to be a complete disaster but when they're in a mind of their own, the world is their oyster, making the impossible happen. Even though Georgia couldn't be with us to film part of the narrative we were still able to make good progress with the Music Video. The Performance is complete and all the shots in the shoot were captured correctly corresponding to the Story Board i created 3 weeks prior to the shoot, and the beginning and ending of the narrative are now complete. The only things i need to film are (The Dream Sequence 'Using the Set at QEMS' and The Shots around Tamworth for the Second Verse, Chorus and Bridge in the Song).

The shoot took a total of 20 minutes to film due to its simplicity, We only used one camera 'Canon EOS 500D DLSR' which was placed on a Tripod with an attachable dolly. Their were a few Shots which i wasn't particularly happy with so i shot them a number of times to try and get the best shot possible. At the end of the Shoot we had to transport the Drum Kit back over to QEMS as they
needed it for the Drum Lessons, However after we moved the Kit back over Matt Johnson and I started to Design and Finish the Lighting used in the Dream Sequence. We have save a total of 3 Presets which correspond to the Actors movements in the scene. For example, At the start of the dream the character is sitting on a chair in a spotlight on an empty stage, he turns his head to look out at the audience floor to see a Girl standing in a spotlight. We designed the lights so that a Spotlight is visable on the stage while he's sitting in the chair with Red Lighting surrounding him to create the feeling like he's in his head which is surrounded by darkness and the only way to see past the dark is if he steps into the lighter side of his life. We were able to place a spotlight on the Audience floor where Georgia will be standing (Due to the characters not being there when designing the lighting we will adjust the lighting positioning once the characters are ready to film on the day of the next shoot) In the second part of the Dream Sequence we see Georgia and Thomas walk towards each other with Spotlights following them, we were able to create a tracking spotlight with a motion time of 8 seconds which allows the lights to move slowly at a pace where by Georgia and Thomas can walk towards each other without having to rush.

When Filming the Beginning Narrative I was able to create some really nice looking focus shots which focused more on the character than the background, i did this by placing the tripod in a certain position and auto focusing on the character before acting the scene, I did this at the beginning where the character runs through the Hall Doors to find he's missed the Performance, This makes the character stand out above anything which is what i originally intended

I plan to film the next shoot This Friday coming '9th October 2015' at 8.30 - 9.30 meaning we have a whole hours filming time. The reason why the shoot is planned shorter than the Performance shoot is because all we need to do is activate the Lighting System and place a chair on the stage in the place marked 'X' to pin point the spotlight positioning.

Diary Day 1 (Thursday 1st October 2015) - Day 1 of Filming 'Performance'

Today was the day of our first shoot, we went over to QEMS at 8.45 and started setting the stage up
ready to film the performance. we finally got the stage set up by 9.10am, We spent 45 minutes filming
6 performances with over 30 clips. Once we got everything ready on the stage we spent 20 minutes deciding on what lighting sequence we should use for the performance with deciding on what colours would benefit the shoot. In total we used 3 Tripods, 2 DSLR's, 1 Go Pro and a Sony Camera. There weren't any issues or problems which we encountered, however Thomas had to leave at 9.35 for a driving lesson, at first we saw this as a major problem but Haydyn and Myself decided to start recording individual shots (I.E - Close up's on Faces, GoPro shots on the Bass/Guitar) and other shots involving Haydyn and Myself.

The time came to 9.49am and Thomas arrived back on set in which we spent the last 25 minutes
Haydyn Briggs Focus Shot for The Last Dance
filming the Group shots on the stage, floor and side wings. To right of this paragraph, you can see Haydyn and Myself performing The Last Dance. Using some focusing techniques on the Canon EOS 500 and 600D we were able to create some lovely framing using the focus on the lens to blur me out in the background which really captures Haydyn's performance vocally.

In the shot to the right again we see another focusing shot however this time we can see Myself 'Ben
Ben Woodward Focus Shot for The Last Dance
Woodward' performing The Last Dance vocally, mainly capturing the Microphone and Mouth. These Shots were mainly influenced by other Music Videos by Pop/Rock bands in the world such as Foo Fighters. The Foo Fighters use this shot in the Music Video for 'Best of You' which is what i originally wanted to capture through the lens for my Video.

While we were filming Haydyn's Bass Performance focusing on his face and Bass i decided to take some footage as evidence of the equipment we used and how we filmed each frame. Here is the clip presented below:
As you can see from the footage we used a GoPro on Haydyn's Bass Headstock to film some experimental shots for the Video, we also placed a Camera focusing on Haydyn's Microphone, I also placed another Camera focusing on my Microphone in which we would film after Haydyn's Bass Performance. It's quite hard to see in the footage presented but we moved two large speakers facing the stage so that we can hear the song clearly whilst performing the song. This was extremely difficult for Thomas to play to as the Drum Kit is the loudest instrument there meaning he had to play as quiet as possible which kind of had a bad impact performance wise as he looks like a laid back jazz musician. The shots filmed using the DSLR's however look fantastic as you can see in the screenshots presented above of Myself and Haydyn Performing The Last Dance on Thursday.

I plan to film the beginning of the Narrative, The Dream Sequence and The Ending Narrative Tomorrow (Friday 2nd October 2015).
