Claude Lévi-Strauss (28th November 1908 - 30th October 2009) was a French anthropologist and ethnologist. He has been called the 'father of modern anthropology', He came up with the Binary Opposition Theory. Levi-Strauss was influenced by several leading media theorists including Saussure, Mauss, Marx etc.

What is a Binary Opposition?
A binary opposition is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. In structuralism, a binary opposition is seen as a fundamental organiser of human philosophy, culture and language. An example of Binary opposition theory includes (Rich/Poor, North/South, Black/White, Up/Down, Slow/Fast, Good/Evil etc. Binary Oppositions have been said to create balance within the world. Without them, the world would be unbalanced.
