Christian Metz's - Model of Genre Development (1974)
Christian Metz in his Book 'Language and Cinema' explored the development of Genre Film and Suggested that Genres pass through four phases of existence:
1) The Experimental
2) The Classic
3) The Parody
4) The Deconstruction
1) By Experimental we mean the phase of early films which explored and experimented with Horror Films in its narratives. Because they helped formalize the narrative conventions of the Horror Film in its earliest phase
The German Expression after World War 1
2) by Classic we mean the phase of films which established the narrative conventions of the Horror Genre in its most successful and and defining periods
3) by Parody we mean films that have mimicked the Horror Genre in some comical way
4) By Deconstruction we mean films which have taken the generic elements of the Horror Genre and Amalgamated them into varying Sub Genres.
Music Videos - Model of Genre Development
1) Narrative based Music Video - (Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia) + (Avicii - Hey Brother)
2) Performance Based Music Video - includes Band, Single Artist and Live Performance (Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody) + (The Beatles - If I Fell)
3) Abstract/Artistic (Surreal) - (Gotye - Somebody That i Used To Know) + (Radiohead - Karma Police)
My Examples of:
Experimental - The Beatles - Love Me Do
This is a Live Band Recording with the band performing on a Stage. Lots of different Camera Shots have been used with multiple shots of the singers (Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison) There are also lots of insight shots of the musicians each having part of the footage to their performance. This Video would come under Performance Based
Classic - Aerosmith Ft Run-D.M.C - Walk This Way
This video starts off with Aerosmith Jamming to Walk This Way and Run-D..M.C in the other room complaining about the noise which ends up in a music battle between the two groups. The Video ends with a live Band Performance on a stage in proper Classic Rock Style. The Video has multiple shots including Dolly Shots, Close-Ups, Hand Held Shots, Low/High Angles and Tracking Shots. Lighting has been used Thoroughly with added shots of the Audience. This Video would come under Performance/Narrative Based
Parody - Weird Al Yankovic - Smells Like Nirvana
The video starts off with the band performing with fat cheerleaders and Weird Al Yankovic pretending to be Kurt Cobain. The video is set out exactly like Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit video but have added comedic elements within the video like people's heads being torn off in mosh pits, people headbanging in smart attire while eating a sandwich and a basketball team playing basketball while the band are performing. This Video would come under Performance Based
Deconstruction - Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare
The video starts with a man strapped to a hospital bed who looks like hes about to be operated on with a saw, the man is wearing restraints and is being dragged through a dirty and abandoned hospital. A priest is present next to him who looks like hes performing an exorcism on the man on the bed. The video is about everything this man can see in his head, we as the audience can see mental people in the hospital and we can clearly see that there are many horror elements used in the video. the video is like the song, a Nightmare. This Video would come under Narrative Based/Performance Based.
